Smoke

Exhale Smoke

Learning: In order to exhale smoke, smoke kitters must have good control over their own breathing and lungs. Instructors may urge their students to perform several breathing exercises before they practice this skill. Once they have a good grasp of the air that flows through their lungs, it’s only a matter of channeling their elemental ability into their breath as it leaves their windpipes. It is a common mistake for beginning learners to summon the smoke past their windpipes and through their lungs, causing some very awkward situations.

Usage: This ability is used for entertainment and not much else. Most Kitters dislike smoke, and as a result, this ability is seldom used in public. (Although the smoke itself is quick to dissipate and leaves the environment completely clean, it still has the scent and texture of nonmagical smoke.)

Limitations: As with most abilities, the quantity and lasting duration depends on the skill and experience of the Kitter. It also takes a lot of practice to learn how to expel smoke smoothly from the lungs.

Smoke Pellets

Learning: Learning how to create smoke pellets is much easier if one learns how to exhale smoke beforehand. First, a kitter must harness the ability to channel their element through their breath. Then, they must condense the smoke that is produced into a pressurized bulb. Maintaining the smoke into the pellet can be fairly taxing to the user if this ability is not trained properly or efficiently. Once the kitter releases the pressure on the smoke pellet, it bursts into an expanding cloud of smoke!

Usage: Crafting smoke pellets can be quite useful in a pinch, as they make a great escape mechanism! They can also be fabulous for magic shows or entertainment in general where you need on-hand smoke for a stunning display.

Limitations: These smoke pellets are not permanent, as they last just about as long as the user’s constitution! If the kitter who created the smoke pellets loses their concentration, the pellet will explode prematurely. The size and strength of the pellet will also be determined by the experience and talent of the Kitter.

Conjure Smoke

Learning: To be able to conjure smoke, one must have a good handle on either their imagination and/or spatial awareness. One must first see a fire in their mind’s eye, burning over the spot they want smoke to appear from. They will then imagine the smoke from said fire coming into the physical world,  With practice, being able to spawn smoke within a close proximity can become a trivial feat.

Usage: This ability is a frequent party trick, and Kitters often use it to create diversions or perform stage magician tricks. If a Kitter has needs to make a swift getaway, they can use it to partially blind or choke their pursuer. (No lasting damage will be made, however.)

Limitations: The effectiveness of this ability depends on the imagination of the magician. Those with less creativeness will find it difficult to conjure even a small bit of smoke, though with practice, they will be able to coax it out.

Lift Objects with Smoke

Learning: In order to lift objects with smoke, one must create a small, compressed cushion of smoke to place the object upon. This can be done by conjuring or exhaling a sufficient amount and concentrating it into a disc shape, adding more smoke until it seems solid. However, it usually takes Kitters a long time to learn how to create a substantial-enough cloud and will often be able to only carry a pebble at first.

Usage: This ability is often used when Kitters want something nearby, but don't feel like getting up to grab it. Since it only lifts small things at such a close range, it's not used for much else.

Limitations: Due to smoke's insubstantiality, nothing larger than a rock can be lifted. The smoke cushion will also be very short-lived, regardless of its castor’s strength. If their concentration is broken, the smoke will dissipate, causing the object to fall back to the ground.
