Alter Body Temperature

Want to prank your friends with a hug? Lost in the cold and need a way to stay warm? Then this is the ability for you!

Learning: Every Kitter with an affinity for fire can feel an inner flame within themselves. It is directly connected to their passion. When their passion grows, so does their inner flame, resulting in their body heating up. By learning to focus purely on the flame itself, a Kitter can learn how to heat (increase body temperature) or cool (decrease body temperature) their flame without raising and lowering their passion. This means that they won’t have to rely on emotional outbursts to alter their heat anymore. Additionally, they can alter their body temperature more drastically to make their skin feel scalding hot or chillingly cold.

Usage: This ability is one of the most commonly used fire abilities. It can be used for keeping yourself or others warm in the cold without the need for warm clothing. If you're lost, heat yourself up to make it easier for other fire affinity Kitters to find you with heat sensing. Of course, you can just use the ability to keep your food from getting cold or for adorable, warm cuddles. Many people forget that fire affinity Kitters can also cool themselves with this technique, resulting in them being fooled by a Kitter pretending he’s cold and sick.

Limitations: This ability cannot burn hot enough to melt objects or even set grass on fire. Maintaining extremely hot body heat for too long can exhaust a Kitter, making them very thirsty. Releasing too much heat from the body is even more dangerous for a fire affinity Kitter, as they risk snuffing out their inner flame.

Addendum by Hekate the Magic Store Shopkeeper: As Kitter Keep’s resident expert on magic, I’ll be writing addendums for many of the elemental abilities. There’s not really much for me to say on this skill except that the beginners need to stop practicing this ability by trying to cook eggs on each other. Honestly, do you know how weird that looks even though it works?

Liquefy Object

Too many obstacles blocking your path? Food not defrosting quick enough? Do you want to see what vegetables look like as a liquid? Then you'll love this ability! Gain the power to liquefy nearly anything with heat!

Learning: This is a slightly harder skill to learn than manipulating one’s body temperature. First, they must learn to focus the heat in their body into one spot, such as their paw or hand. Second, they touch the object with their paw or hand and “push” heat into it, heating it to the point that it melts. Objects that melt at lower temperatures, such as ice, are easy to use this ability on. Melting objects such as metal, bricks, or watermelons is much more difficult, however. It is possible to heat an object without melting it, though it requires intense concentration and practice to do.

Usage: This skill is typically used for crafts and cooking. Those who enjoy crafts find that this ability lets them mold nearly anything into art. Cooks who are extremely busy or impatient use this ability to heat or defrost their food quickly. Also, should an obstacle lie in the way, then Kitter can simply melt a hole through. Make sure not to melt something that someone needed, though!

Limitations: Melting difficult objects for long periods of time can be quite tiring for a Kitter. Flammable objects such as grass and paper will usually catch fire rather than melt. While it is possible to force them to melt rather than catch fire, doing this requires intense focus and several days of constant practice.

Addendum by Hekate the Magic Store Shopkeeper: Before Nullstones were discovered on the Clawtooth Islands, Ostaria had a huge problem with fire Kitters escaping with this ability. It got to the point that we designed specialized cells that were extremely cold. When a fire Kitter becomes too cold, their inner flame cools, causing all of their abilities to become significantly weaker. Nowadays, we just use Nullstones imported from the Clawtooth Islands.

Manipulate Fire

Shape and bend, grow or suppress; this is the power you possess. This skill will grant you the ability to burn your enemies and calm raging wildfires. Use it wisely.

Learning: One of the most difficult Novice-level skills among the elements, fire does not take kindly to being bound by a Kitter. It struggles to be free to unleash its rage. Even more troublesome is the fact that fire is shapeless in its natural form. The first step to taming fire is to start out small. Try moving candlelight by lifting the flame from the wick and moving it around the room. The fire will try to break free, but the Kitter must assert their hold on it. Once they have mastered candlelight, they can keep moving on to bigger and bigger fires until they achieve full mastery.

Usage: The most important of all fire abilities, the uses for this skill are endless. Some Kitters like to implement this ability into dances, creating beautiful fire dances that enthrall audiences. Others use this to suppress fires before they rage out of control. Most use this ability for more mundane purposes, such as making a lantern burn brighter or for cooking.

Limitations: The larger a fire is, the more powerful its will is. Every time a Kitter manipulates fire, they are commanding it to obey them. Large flames are proud and filled with wrath. They despise the idea of being controlled by a mere Kitter. Distance also plays a part, for the further a Kitter is from a flame, the less of their will they can exert onto the fire.

Addendum by Hekate the Magic Store Shopkeeper: Have you ever seen a storyteller use fire to tell a story? It’s amazing! With a campfire as their stage, they use this ability to bend the flames into shapes. They make it look so easy, too! However, it’s actually extremely tiring for them to narrate a story and maintain such control over their fire at the same time. It’s abilities like this that make me wish I my affinity was for some other element. It would be so fun to be a fire dancer! Then again, I have less grace than a Googator, so trying to fire dance would probably be a bad idea for me to try.

Conjure Fire

If you see flames just suddenly materialize out of thin air, you’re not crazy. A fire Kitter is probably nearby conjuring fire.

Learning: This ability requires a good imagination. The Kitter simply has to look at a spot, imagine the fire is there, and concentrate. They shouldn’t try to imagine the fire appearing, but instead should try imagining that it’s already there. With enough focus, they’ll be able to create floating flames in front of them.

Usage: This ability can save lives in the wilderness. Campfire can instantly be made to ward off cold, lights can be created to find the way, and a giant fire can be formed as a signal. Every Kitter is expected to learn how to combine this skill with Manipulate Fire.

Limitations: Distance and size play key roles when it comes to this skill. Most Kitters can only conjure fire up to a few feet in front of them. Summoning big flames can also prove to be quite exhausting to summon. For example, summoning flames the size of a large bonfire can leave an average Kitter feeling quite weak. It’s better to stick to summoning small flames that can be combined with Manipulate Fire.

Addendum by Hekate the Magic Store Shopkeeper: Kitter scientists were baffled for years on how this ability functioned. After all, the First Law of Thermodynamics states that you can’t create something out of nothing. After many years of research, it was discovered how this ability functions. As you probably know, oxygen is extremely flammable and is in the air we breathe. Well, when a fire Kitter conjures fire, they’re actually drawing energy from their inner flame and igniting a little of this oxygen, resulting in fire. Pretty cool, right?

Infrared Vision

Requirements: Raise/Lower Body Temperature

Learning: Imagine the world has no color, it is made up of levels of heat. Fire kitters have a unique magic that allows them to see the world in such a spectrum. To begin a kitter must find something warm and get acquainted with it, touching it, observing it, smelling it, whatever it is they need to do. When this magic must be summoned in a pure form, focussing on thoughts of heat and fond sights a kitter must directly push magic from their whiskers into their palm, which may take many attempts. Magic will appear as a small glowing ball of wispy accent-colored magic that is attracted to the palm. A kitter must then split this magic into two and press it against their eyes, which will naturally absorb and access the hidden potential for  a new world of sight. Sometimes the eyes will not accept this new magic, and the warm object will appear as normal. Once infrared vision is achieved the world will appear quite differently, a range of reds, yellows and blank blacks. The warm object should be the primary source of a kitters focus once magic is applied to the eyes, as it will help them perceive the new reality without bumping into unseen items.

Usage: Seeing through walls to eavesdrop or see possible threats this ability is useful in many environments. When lost, a fire-affinity kitter may find civilization through heat, find the way out of the dark, hunt for prey- Possibilities are vast!

Limitations: Commonly causes eye strain, is also very taxing and difficult to learn. Too much magic applied to eyes has caused permanent infrared vision, and in many other cases small burns on the eyes. This magic can be dangerous to learn so it is highly recommended to take extreme caution.

Manipulate Melted Objects

Requirements: Liquefy Object

Learning: As this ability is moving something unnatural to a kitters affinity it is often times difficult to learn. To manipulate an object they have recently liquified a kitter must focus on the heat, seeking out the magic the object they infused with to make it a liquid in the first place. With this they must try and lift the magic, at first they often times simply remove the magic essence from the object and reclaim it. A kitter must learn the connectedness of the magic and the liquid to manipulate it, or rather both at once.

Usage: Quickly scald an enemy with a melted object, create art from ripping magical energy away from a manipulated liquid object, create an intricate display of moving liquids. Not deadly in battle, but poses as a good distraction.

Limitations: Incredibly difficult to learn, especially with a large amount of liquids. Liquids such as vegetables, which do not have a natural liquid state are more difficult to manipulate as well, as they are already against the laws of nature. Very taxing as well, users must be sure to rest and stay hydrated to avoid over taxation of the bodies limits.

Colored Flames

Requirements: Manipulate Fire

Learning: Coloring flames is easily accessible after one understands fire. A beginner should ‘hold’ a small amount of fire with their magic - close to their body is preferable. Some find emotions the easiest to link to fire, focusing on moods that they feel in the moment or thinking of memories with strong emotions attached. These emotions must be felt through the body, and imagined past it, usually the fire will change simply through this. Sometimes fire needs an extra push, with the kitter directly reaching out with magic and forcing it to be another color.

Usage: Natural predators or dangerous wildlife can easily be startled by bright colors, especially rapidly changing which can be accessed with more trained magic. Other than this colored flames are used for aesthetics, small shows of art, or to catch the attention of customers with as a food vendor.

Limitations: Affects only a small amount of flames, and it's difficult to swap between colors. Those that have a difficult time recognizing or feeling emotions find this ability more difficult; however it can be done with more forceful magic and less emotional connection.

Breathe Fire

Requirements: Conjure Fire

Learning: The difficulty of breathing fire is not simply conjuring fire within the body, which causes severe burning. A fire kitter has a unique trait in its biology after it grows from meep to kitter, a small gland of magic-infused liquid is attached within the esophagus. As a meep, it develops, and only connects once a kitter reaches maturity. When learning to breathe fire, a kitter must have an understanding of this gland, and may sense it by simply closing their eyes and ‘feeling’ it with their magic. To breathe fire they must expel this liquid up and out through their mouth, the liquid turning to flame within the mouth. Being concentrated and familiar magic it does not burn the user. To breathe fire rather than spit out minimal amounts an inch from their mouth a kitter must learn how to exhale while expelling the liquid, to spray and push it outwards. Aim is another matter altogether.

Usage: Fire kitters have long since breathed fire in competitions and dance, intricate displays of body control alongside magic becoming an amazing display that some even pay to see. Buildings to be demolished are often burned through breathing fire, as the fire is less dangerous than normal fire and available in plentiful amounts. Due to it’s magic, certain chefs create special dishes created with fire breath, which they insist is better tasting than normal flambe.

Limitations: There are many cases of internal burns from beginners simply conjuring fire magic within their bodies instead of breathing fire. Breathing fire requires less magic to use and comes in a near infinite supply but the fire is less hot than what is conjured. Very difficult to aim at the start.
